The US Department of Education recognizes 6 distinct educational regions, each of which is overseen by a different accrediting body. The North Central Region covers the largest geographical area, comprising historically black colleges and universities in the 19 states of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and West Virginia.
